To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

We talked about the H.265 video codec standard way back in May 2012 in this post H.265 High Efficiency Video Coding or HEVC Coming in 2013: and then again in December when we asked What is the Big Deal About H.265 or HEVC Anyway?

So, you need to edit and produce some video for business use. Maybe for posting clips to a website, maybe for uploading to YouTube or to your online video platform (OVP). But you’re the designated video producer and are looking for the best professional software editor to buy and get started.

Check out the January cover story in Broadcast Engineering to get a crystal ball view of where the media industry is heading. In July and August 2012, in association with Avid, Ovum conducted an independent survey of 200 senior broadcast, pay-TV, studio technology and operations executives to better understand where these industry leaders see the industry heading. Events in 2012 such as the Olympics and the U.S. presidential debates have reaffirmed the value of event-based television programming as a core component of the global media services landscape. However, other ongoing changes in both audience and advertiser behavior continue to transform the media and broadcast industries.

The Iomega px2-300d is a two-bay NAS box that delivers very good performance, excellent backup and surveillance features, and a helpful LCD that reports on the unit’s status (IP address, current time, storage remaining, and so on). Its EMC LifeLine operating system is also one of the more feature-rich ones in the industry. But you should buy this box bare—Iomega populates it with enterprise-class hard drives that jack up the price.

A few days back, I referred to a post by online video analyst and expert Dan Rayburn which questioned whether HEVC (H.265) would see any real “adoption for consumer services” in the next 5 years. Dan — and the respected firm Frost and Sullivan, in which he is a principal analyst — are skeptical.

Will Apple Continue to Support the Pro Community?

The FCPX series I posted a couple of weeks got a lot of people talking. One issue that came up frequently is Apple’s apparent lack of interest in continuing their support of the pro filmmaking community. This is indeed a valid concern worth taking seriously. In one way, the writing does seem to be on the wall. Shake was discontinued. Color was discontinued. FCPX “seems” to have been redesigned with the pro-sumer in mind (I put “seems” in quotes because as I noted before, the feature se...
