To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

When Final Cut Pro X was updated to 10.1 in December, with the release of the ultra-fast Mac Pro, Apple did away with Events and Projects, for the most part, and introduced Libraries.

FCP X Quick Tip: Capturing Footage Via Firewire

Final Cut Pro X will automatically create a new clip every time it senses a break in the footage. This is usually fine if the source was a newer/cleaner camera. It’s a big problem when capturing from an older source.

In part one of this article I asked about the value of channel strips and in particular the Avid Channel Strip, I promised in part two to say what I like and dislike about the Avid Channel Strip, so here goes!

Final Cut Pro Post Production for the Coen Brother

The Coen brothers tackle post with a workflow that is specific to them. I had a chance to dig into that world with Katie McQuerrey, who is credited as an additional editor on Inside Llewyn Davis. McQuerrey started with the Coen brothers as they transitioned into digital post, helping to adapt their editorial style to Apple Final Cut Pro.

Final Cut Pro goes 10.1.1!

Shortly after the release of 10.1, and quite unexpectedly, Apple has just announced that 10.1.1 is available for download. The new patch does not include any new features - it's all about bug fixes and resolving stability issues. Yet it's good news nonetheless that Apple responds to problems reported by FCPX users that quick. There are more issues though, and we hope to see next update soon.

Continuing what’s become something of a yearly tradition, films of considerable length have colonized American movie screens this Oscar season, from Hollywood releases like “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” (2 hours 41 minutes) and “The Wolf of Wall Street” to art house fare like “Blue Is the Warmest Color” (both 2 hours 59 minutes long).

Oscar Analysis: Is the Academy’s Split Decision

Often, come Awards night, the Academy doles out multiple statues to a general “above-the-line” favorite, while another “below-the-line” leader gathers its own momentum. And while no one knows for sure what surprises “the envelope please” will bring this year, it’s possible that two centers of “Gravity,” are shaping up already.

Another Update on Adobe CC

Last year, when Adobe announced a subscription-only model and that, as a result, customers would thus no longer be able to (maintain the illusion that they could) outright buy and own their software for eternity, there was a lot of hullabaloo. At that time, I did my research on both sides of the issue, and did my best to present a clear and objective understanding of the situation in two blog posts, HERE and HERE.
