To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

When Avid Technology CEO Gary Greenfield resigned on February 11, Avid's board appointed Louis Hernandez Jr., one of its own, to the company's top spot . Hernandez, the former Chairman of the Board and CEO of Open Solutions, a technology provider to global financial institutions, turns out to have a surprisingly interesting and varied mix of experiences and interests that dovetail nicely with Avid's technical and creative missions.

Thelma Schoonmaker and Martin Scorsese. Walter Murch and Francis Ford Coppola. Tim Squyres and Ang Lee. For many an editor, these longtime creative partnerships represent the most alluring and elusive of career ideals. For editor Andrew Weisblum, that ideal is well on the way to becoming a reality — twice over.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, Sandra Bullock opened the envelope. "And the Oscar goes to," she said as she tore, "William Goldenberg, 'Argo.'" With those eight words, veteran film editor and Temple alumnus William Goldenberg, BA SMC '82, won an Academy Award for "Best Film Editing" from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Leading up to Sunday's Oscars, EW.com will take a closer look at four categories that moviegoers may mistakenly think of as "technical." First up: Film Editing, with insights from Life of Pi's Tim Squyres, Silver Linings Playbook's Jay Cassidy and Crispin Struthers, and Zero Dark Thirty's Dylan Tichenor and William Goldenberg, the latter of whom also cut Argo, making him one of only a handful of editors in Oscar history to compete with himself.

As Life of Pi‘s Squyres puts it, “An actor might read a particular line between six and 100 times, but only one take’s gonna be in the movie.” It’s the editor’s job to pick it, at least initially. It was on Sense and Sensibility, his fourth film with Lee, that Squyres had the epiphany all good editors experience: “It was the first film that I had done with Ang that was all in English, and it’s Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alec Rickman, and Hugh Grant — these great, great actors...

In a continuing conversation with the Oscar season’s best-editing nominees, I recently had the privilege of talking with William Goldenberg, who is actually twice nominated—for Ben Affleck’s Argo and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty.
