It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Of all the tech categories at the Oscars, Best Editing is the one most closely tied to Best Picture. In the 77 years that the award has been handed out, 33 have gone to Best Picture winners, most recently "The Hurt Locker" (Chris Innis, Bob Murawski) in 2009.

Every nominated film for Best Picture this year was created using Avid solutions and every editor nominated for Best Editing used Avid along with several other nominees in top categories. We’ll be tuning in to see who comes out on top, but as far as we’re concerned, all of our customers are winners. Use the following ballot to follow along at home.

Just yesterday, word spread about a new iPad app that will offer professionals and hobbyists alike around 90% of the tools that an editor would use on a blockbuster movie. It’s an exciting technological development to be sure, but simply having access to a kitchen doesn’t make us all chefs. Francis Ford Coppola talked about editing in mythical terms, calling it the “essence of cinema” and the “alchemy” that brought everything together. In other words, editing is the magic of movie ma...

Fresh out of college, my first real job was at a postproduction house in New York City. There I was fortunate enough to brush elbows with editors who'd been in the business for decades. One of the things you need to last in the ever-changing world of postproduction is the ability to evolve with the development of the technology that surrounds you.

David O. Russell has, as many will attest, his own way of shooting a movie. “He’s not hanging out in video village [like most directors do],” explains Jay Cassidy, Oscar-nominated editor (along with Crispin Struthers) of Silver Linings Playbook. The film has earned two Oscar nominations for Russell--for best director and best adapted screenplay--and nods for its four stars, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Jacki Weaver, as well as being nominated for best picture.

If you want to start a giant flamewar online, you can always count on three things: HDR, Canon vs. Nikon, Android vs. Iphone, and PC vs. Mac. Try as people may, there still seems to be this lingering mindset that there are big differences in performance/productivity/creativity in owning one versus the other. There is also a great amount of debate that circles when we switch from one to another. For the most part – I get it. We are creatures of comparison, and we love being in tribes.
