It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The video industry has been moving toward completely file-based workflows, but that paradigm doesn’t replace all of the functions that traditional videotape recorders served. To bridge the gap, companies such as AJA, Blackmagic Design, Convergent Design, Sound Devices and others have developed solid-state recorders for field and studio operation. I recently tested Blackmagic Design’s HyperDeck Shuttle 2, which is touted as the world’s smallest uncompressed recorder.

Thunderbolt is the latest protocol for peripherals used by Apple on its computers to carry audio, video, data and power over a single cable. The protocol combines Apple’s DisplayPort technology and PCIe into a single connectivity path. The technology can be used to daisy-chain numerous devices, including storage, monitors and broadcast I/O hardware.

There is pent up demand for a high-powered NLE designed around a standard layout. Autodesk is trying to satisfy this desire with Smoke 2013. This version is optimized for the Mac interface and operating system and is intended as an easier transition for editors coming from Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro. It gives editors the best of both worlds, with a timeline that functions in a known fashion coupled to node-based effects common to Flame.

Codex recorders capture stereo streams from paired Arri Alexa cameras used to shoot the 3D movie. Back in my day (yes, you can visualize me sitting in a rocking chair with a smoldering pipe in one hand and an afghan on my lap, peering out at you over the tops of half-moon spectacles, if you so wish) the light meter was a cinematographer’s best friend: a primary tool and an invaluable asset. Although there were exceptions—the late Douglas Slocombe, ASC, BSC, could famously call out the exposure based only on looking at the scene—they were extremely rare. Even the most experienced and...

The EBU has warned that the post-production color correction costs required for video shot under LED lighting could outweigh the power savings compared with traditional tungsten lights. This is a setback for the LED movement, which thought it had cast tungsten lighting into history as a result of not just of the greatly reduced energy consumption but also other advantages, notably lower maintenance and heat production.
