It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Editors are always looking for ways to make their editing workflow faster and more efficient, and one way of doing that is by putting the many keyboard shortcuts in Premiere Pro to good use. One key that does a ton of useful and powerful things is the Alt/Option key, and in this tutorial from Premium Beat, Jason Boone shows you all the ways you can use Alt/Option in Premiere to speed up your editing process.

With Apple having gone all-in on USB-C, it’s no surprise that third-party manufacturers are scrambling to meet demand for compatible accessories – but LaCie is no stranger to the new port. The company began offering USB-C drives back in 2015, recently announced drives using the same super-speed SSDs used in the new MacBook Pro and has today announced USB-C versions of two of its most popular drives...

There has always been plenty of winging about the lack of Apple’s commitment to professionals but throughout my career I’ve been able to look at what Apple is doing and see where they are taking us. It has always excited me but for the first time I’m a little concerned, so it’s a good time to throw a few solutions into the ether and hope that one or two find their way to the Apple development teams. Here we go…

Rarely a week goes by these days without someone proclaiming movies dead or dying or zombified and feasting on the brains of their victims. Mainstream Hollywood has seen better days, but film as an art form is just fine; in a world where Moonlight, The Handmaiden, Arrival, and Loving are all competing for screen space, there’s still life left in movies yet. I’m more concerned about movie theaters, where the presentation seems to get worse every single year.

If you’ve ever tried to store a Final Cut Pro X library on an external hard drive connected to your local network, or via an actual NAS from a company like Synology, then you’ve likely been greeted with an unsupported volume type error. This error is there to let you know that you must store a library on a local, SAN, or supported SMB location.

(TechXplore)—A small team of researchers with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has found that compressing recorded music into the MP3 format results in the loss of emotional tones, leaving the result with less depth. In their paper published in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, the researchers describe their study of the impact of compressing recordings of musical instruments and which instruments suffer the most degradation.

Universal critical acclaim and one Oscar later, life is good for editor Tom Cross, as he takes a break from his full days editing Scott Cooper’s upcoming Hostiles. On the press circuit for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, a December musical release starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone which has generated tremendous awards season chatter, Cross takes a moment to reflect on his collaborative relationship with Chazelle, which dates back to Whiplash—the 2013 Sundance Jury Prize-winning short, fol...
