It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

I was in the last generation of filmmakers to cut their teeth on old Arriflex 16mm cameras and Steenbeck editing tables (do the math, but I’m old). Since the advent of non-linear editing hardware and software, it seems as though films have gotten — faster, but is this really the case, or an optical illusion? An exhaustive and searchable database of Average Shot Length from the birth of cinema to now is available online, and it shows the evolution of editing in cinema. Click below to see ju...

Apple’s embrace of reflective displays is one thing that annoys me. As I type this, I’m looking at a 27″ Thunderbolt display, which has a reflective surface. I’ve got it set up in a room, and at an angle, so the glare doesn’t bother me. But there is a light on the ceiling of my office, and I can’t turn it on because of the glare of the display. My MacBook Pro has glare too, but it’s easier to move it to an angle where the glare doesn’t bother me. As for the iPad, there are times ...

Western Digital makes some of my favorite hard drives, and one drive in particular recently caught my interest: the My Cloud. The idea of the My Cloud was appealing: managing my own cloud network that could be accessed from anywhere and also shared out of, but without a monthly fee. Basically, it is a personal DropBox. I had a pretty set-in-stone process for working remotely and delivering content which has included DropBox, but I decided to give a wholly WD workflow a shot and see if it could d...

As a video editor, Final Cut Pro played an important role in my life. It connected me to my purpose and made so many of my ideas into a reality. I was intimidated by the software at first but when I clicked to open it, there was something magical about it. I was about to make something. In 2003,…

AMD W8100 Pro Graphics Card: 4K-Ready Anyone who has purchased the new MacPro cylinder should be familiar with AMD, as this little beast sports two AMD FirePro workstation class GPUs with 2GB, 3GB, or 6GB of dedicated VRAM and up to 2048 stream processors. It seems as though the success of the new Mac Pro machine built added confidence into AMD, just enough for them to decide to produce the AMD W8100. Most gamers know of AMD after their purchase […] The post AMD W8100 Pro Graphics Card: 4...
