To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

I have to admit I never really understood the Softube Console 1 until I started to use it. I remember the first time I saw it last year and I couldn’t help thinking to myself, oh another control surface, it’s not like we don’t already have too many of them and I have never been a huge fan of those kind of things.

All is Lost producer on finding the perfect sound

As producer, part of Dodson's job was recruiting the perfect sound editing team for the film, which is now available on DVD. It was a critical task, as the movie features little dialogue from Redford, so the sounds of the storm, the wind, the waves and the boat act as characters in themselves. Most of those sounds would be added and created in post production.

With more than 30 years of experience, the sound editor Wylie Stateman has worked on a wide range of movies, from comedies like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” to Quentin Tarantino films like “Inglourious Basterds” and “Django Unchained.” He is now nominated for his sound editing on “Lone Survivor,” Peter Berg’s drama based on a memoir by the Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell about his time in Afghanistan. There are 4 of older ones (based on an earlier version of MAResourcesMapping.plist) with which you may (or may not) get occasional flashes in case you have the bright option with piano roll on; then just uncheck the option in LPX preferences to turn it off. I have marked these zips with orange tag. Others are marked with green.

Dolby reveals how notable movie SFX were made

Movies are riddled with sound effects, but some have transcended their cinematic boundaries to become a popular cultural staple, a sound effect that is recognizable on its own and often used and parodied in others' works. Lightsabers are one such sound effect, the making of which Dolby detailed yesterday in a blog post, along with seven other notable sounds.

Alternative Workflow for Audio in Redcine-X

As much as we DITs try to avoid it, on smaller productions we are sometimes tasked with duties traditionally done by an assistant editor. One of those jobs includes syncing audio. Imagine this scenario: you have 4 channels of production audio with timecode that does not match the camera footage. You pop open Redcine-X and get to work manually syncing audio for dailies, a process that is time consuming but relatively painless.
