It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The origin of FCPX Grill can be traced back to a discussion that Ron Dawson of Dare Dreamer Mag and I had in late 2013. I called him up and asked HIM if he’d have me on HIS podcast, Crossing the 180. From that discussion I decided that I really enjoyed talking about Final Cut Pro X and so a show was born. Ron and Chris also go into the difference between our backup policies.

Thanks to the Other World Computing's test lab, we have some preliminary benchmarks on the entry level 'late 2013' Mac Pro 3.5GHz Hex-Core. We decided to see how it compared to the 'mid 2010' Mac Pro 3.33GHz Hex-Core.

MacNN has learnt that Apple's in-demand new Mac Pro will not be available to in store customers until as late as March or April. The information was supplied to us by an Apple Australia business sales specialist who also advised that they are being told to direct customers to the online channel as it the only way that customers can currently secure a new Mac Pro...

One of the many new features that were part of the 7.0.0 release was Dynamic Media Folders or DMF. DMF allows for media services to be applied to folders as a set of rules and actions and processed whether the Media Composer application is running or not.

In the course of my “industry research” I came across a very cool little application called “Plotagon“. It is a simple integrated script and storyboard application with real time playback and voices of what is written, very similar to a gaming engine...

Final Cut Pro X 10.1 features "optimized playback and rendering using dual GPUs in the new Mac Pro." That begs the question: "Will it optimize a Mac Pro tower with dual GPUs?" We happen to have two Radeon HD 7970s on loan from MacVidCards. They are 'kissing cousins' to the FirePro D700s offered as the top GPU option for the 2013 Mac Pro. So we did some quick testing.

Win Van den Broeck does an excellent job of listing all the available fixes and “new” items in Media Composer v7.0.3 in his blog. For me, my two favorites are listed as bug fixes in the 7.0.3 Read Me, that border on being new features as they start enabling new workflows, or re-enabling old ones.

I think anyone using PhraseFind, ScriptSync, and SoundBite appreciates what dialogue can bring in finding what you’re looking for as part of the editorial process. At times it is akin to finding a needle in a haystack. So it was interesting to see the Apple patent on voice-tagging photos and using Siri to retrieve them as part of the claims expanding the capabilities of voice based interaction with Apple devices. It will be seen as new and innovative if and when it hits a future version of iOS...
