It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Over the years, building ‘Hackintosh’ computers has become both a lot easier and more popular. For those unfamiliar, a Hackintosh is essentially a machine running OS X on non-Apple approved and manufactured hardware. There are many reasons to build a Hackintosh instead of buying a Mac directly from Apple. They can be more expandable, faster, have more features and configurations, run quieter and can be a great learning experience. One of the biggest reasons to go down the road of building yo...

Never say we’re biased on FCPX Grill. Art found the show on the iTunes and has been listening since the beginning. He had some points he wanted to share with me and one day via twitter, we got into a discussion that was very interesting. He was commenting that we got a little to snarky (my word, not his) about other systems and wanted to point out the “other side of the story”. So, trying to be fair and balanced (not like those guys), I decided to have him on the show. Within hours I had h...

A loaner Mac Pro arrived from Apple on Friday afternoon. It’s a 12 core, dual D700 GPUs, 512 GB Flash storage and 32 GB of RAM. Here are my initial thoughts after three days.

I see 10.1 as a very solid groundwork for moving forward with FCP X. No crashing, so far. Speed and responsiveness are better than 10 dot naught. The new library workflow is a most welcome addition. My favorite new feature is the clip indicator as I can see that little dot becoming something very important in the way we edit.

"Apple announced availability of the new Mac Pro on Wednesday, boasting that the redesigned desktop will sport the latest Intel Xeon processors, dual workstation-class GPUs, PCIe-based flash storage, and ultra-fast ECC memory. The launch less than a week before Christmas means Apple will meet its self-imposed December deadline, announced by the company in October, when it also announced pricing for the professional-grade machine..."

As you all may know, I’ve chosen FCP X as my NLE for the foreseeable future. However, I can’t always guarantee that I’ll be able to use FCP on jobs that I don’t run through my shop.

One of the big features of the new Mac Pro is the ability to operate multiple 4K displays via the Thunderbolt connection. Though the option itself sounds great, choosing a 4K display may not be so easy, and definitely is costly (not to mention a couple of these). As 9to5mac.com reports, for a short period of time Apple was offering Sharp 4K displays in the European online Apple Store, but they have been withdrawn quickly (image below).

The future of the Internet and the freedom to use open software is threatened by licensing and patent ideologies that benefit only a select few. Therefore, it is of critical importance that the average human being understand the ideas behind software licensing and patents.
