It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

What if the animation Oscars were chosen by people who knew nothing about animation?

Finding new ways to create unique and exciting type means that you're always on the hunt for inspiration. There's plenty out there, particularly from independent studios having to create a wide range of type for a wide range of brands and products.

Well I guess Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon because working on R&S was the only goal I had in life at the time. I thought it was impossible since it had been off the air for nearly a decade. It was one of the worst experiences emotionally, but I met so many talented people and it made me practice harder. 2nd would be Spongebob. I feel like I wasn’t a good artist until that job.

Back in 2013, the release of Dreamworks Animation's Rise Of The Guardians was met with a thud and a crack in its opening weekend. While the film wound up managing to make a decent gross, compared to its budget at least, it wound up being the beginning of a dangerous spiral for DWA's profit margin.

It became clear that animation is an overlooked medium within The Academy when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson presented the award for “Best Animated Feature” Sunday night. Incorrectly labelling animation as a genre, Johnson began to introduce the lineup of animated nominees. The point is, animation is a medium, not a genre. Animation is just a means by which a genre can come alive. When your presenter can’t correctly speak about a category in the most influential film awards show, you know ...

Over the last week we’ve been posting daily articles about the Disney Revival movies and now it’s time for you to decide which one is the best! Reading through the articles my fellow Rotowriters and I published, it’s easier to truly see how much Disney has changed over the last decade.

Everyone has a different take on what the relationship between animation and cinematography is or what it should be, judging by that opinion article I recently wrote on the subject.

On this date, eighty years ago, the first full color Mickey Mouse cartoon was released. Titled The Band Concert, it also featured an early, longer-beaked incarnation of one D. Duck.

It's been an incredible few months for Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon. In January, the Kilkenny-based team of creatives received an Oscar nomination for their second animated feature film, Song of the Sea – just five years after The Secret of Kells won the studio its first Oscar nomination and rave reviews around the world.

From the pages of Alan Smith’s Here Be Monsters! (2005) Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi release the Boxtroll creatures from the stillness of the page and set them loose to roam the big (and small) screen. When I spoke with Annable and Stacchi I discovered two humble directors keen to play down their own contributions and acknowledge the team of craftsmen and artists who, in their own words, “spent two years making us look good.”
