It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

Better audio in your DSLR, like any ENG video camera? We always dreamt about that but nobody has found the ideal solution. Typically, we have 2 options: 1.Separate audio recording. 2.In Cam recording improved by audio mixer. In both cases there are disadvantages. BUT, there is a 3rd way...

We’ve written about how to get content into SpeedGrade, and have described the EDL Conform process in previous posts, but SpeedGrade has one more EDL trick up its sleeve that I think many of you will love. This one is about as easy as it gets.

I’ve made no secret of my love for PluralEyes, the auto-syncing tool that came to market a few years ago. It has saved me countless hours in the edit suite doing that most menial of tasks: syncing. A competitor popped up a while back (not counting Final Cut Pro X’s built-in option) called WooWave. It’s certainly a quirky name that fits this quirky tool.

The latest software Avid and NewBlueFx is must have (and Must get someone else to pay!) There are two software packages available which are great tools to have in your editing room. Avid Media Composer (AMC) 6.5 is the update with which I would replace version 5.5. Updating software is always a tenuous proposition: you never know what has been broken until you make the upgrade...

Using the Time Displacement effect in Adobe After Effects, you can create some nifty video stutter effects without a great deal of effort, and without editing the footage whatsoever. In short, the playback timing of video can be altered using a greyscale displacement map. Black regions of the displacement map will show frames prior to the current position, 50% grey will have no effect, and white will show frames ahead of the current position.

The proposed "reforms" to Australian Content rules has once again raised the question of the purpose of the Australian screen production industries, as the battle lines are once again being drawn to protect the telling of "our own stories". The battle is important and I encourage you to sign the petitions, which you can find...
