It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Contributing another episode to his look at using some of the features of VRayforC4D 1.8 for Cinema 4D, Josef Bsharah shows how to render out caustics from V-Ray. Caustics are a concentration of light that are caused from a curved surface. It is not uncommon to see caustics associated with transparent refractive objects such as glass or water.

Inspired by what Lok Fu created with the Newton2 Physics Engine for After Effects, The Motion Boutique set out to test creating soft body forms using the Connect Layers script and Newton2, with some pretty fantastic results. If you haven’t seen the animation that Lok Fu in question, you can see that here - Using Newton2 for a Character’s Secondary Animation.

John Chen posts a super quick guide to baking normals from Zbrush so that they come in great in Marmoset ToolBag. You may remember John’s other handwork when he broke down his realistic Basset Hound image showing the process for creating the model in ZBrush and rendering in Maya using Arnold. If not you can check that out here, it’s pretty great – Breakdown for Creating the Super Realistic Basset Hound Using Zbrush, Maya, and Arnold.

Yader calls this technique in Cinema 4D, “poor man’s Chrono sculpting” – but being that the Lightwave Group’s ChronoSculpt is under $400, I like to think of it more as “working with the tools that you have”.

There have been plenty of tutorials on the topic of rigging and animating characters in After Effects using a mix of DUIK, puppet tools, and various scripts. There have also been some great tutorials showing how to create reactive and complex physical interactions in After Effects, using the Newton2 Physics engine, which is pretty much the only game in town as far as After Effects is concerned.
