It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Mike Batchelor offers a look at how you can “fake dynamics” using X-Particles. Mike shows how to set something up that looks very much like it is a sofbody or a spring dynamics simulation, however it is completely faked.

Long Shadows, love them or hate them, it is a current design trend, there are several tutorials on how to do this in other adobe products like illustrator or photoshop, but this tutorial is all about After Effects. its dynamic, and can easily be turned into a template. This is much faster to process than just duplicating the layer over and over again.

Well, it’s finally here! It’s been a while since we first announced that this fireball tutorial was being made and due to workload it was being pushed back again and again – but we know that it’s been worth the wait.

Gardner Raymond revisits a previous post with a new spin, taking a look at how the magnification effects was created. Gardner offered some insight into how he recreated the title design and motion graphics from the film “The Art Of Flight” from consequence video designs. That tutorial had an extensive look at peppering designs and animation that made extensive use of Rowbyte’s Plexus plugin for After Effects.

Creating a muti-use spinning globe can be pretty practical as well as worthwhile project to keep around and if it is one that you can edit or change the style of to fit project needs, all the better. Over the course of this blog I have posted quite a few animating “Spinning Globe” tutorials that use After Effects. The thing is, you can never have too many globe animations in broadcast work.

Showing how you can create a folding animation using 3D layers in After Effects, Ridvan Maloku walks through creating this little animated title effect. Although it looks pretty straight forward, the interesting part is the fact that Ridvan has chosen to have the type fold on an angle.

Mt. Mograph shows how to use After Effects shape layers to create an animation that has the shape layers look like they fuse into one another. If you have seen the effects of “metaballs” in 3d, it is a similar effect in 2d, where the shapes look like they will bleed into each other with a bit of surface tension...

Showing how simple it can be to create painted type on a background image, Rich Aguilar walks through creating the effect in After Effects with a bit of compositing and no special plugins. This can be an adventure in blend modes and workflow. You want to have the type look like it is actually painted on without destructively distressing the type in Ae so that the characters can no longer be edited or changed easily.
