To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

Why 3D doesn't Work A letter from Murch to Eb

January 24, 2011, 10:14 AM

http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2011/01/post_4.htm...

I received a letter that ends, as far as I am concerned, the discussion about 3D. It doesn't work with our brains and it never will. The notion that we are asked to pay a premium to witness an inferior and inherently brain-confusing image is outrageous. The case is closed. This letter is from Walter Murch, seen at left, the most respected film editor and sound designer in the modern cinema. As a editor, he must be intimately expert with how an image interacts with the audience's eyes. He...

When it absolutely has to be there

A lot of the productions we post these days are delivered electronically – either on the web or as DVDs (or Blu-rays). Bouncing a finished product to an FTP site is a pretty good method for getting short projects around the world, but often masters or longer DVDs still require shipping. For many of us, FedEx is a mainstay; however, if it has to get halfway around the world by the next day, then even FedEx falls short.

AES was an amazing experience. The launch of Pro Tools 9 was universally acclaimed and the news spread around the world within minutes of our announcement. Central to that information blitz were the folks re-tweeting our news, who were competing for a chance to win a copy of Pro Tools. Tens of thousands of tweets and re-tweets later, we announced the winners of our contest: @Fiya_Juan, @Omnilimbo, @Raygproductions and @Onlinerock.

The holiday season is upon us, and you know what that means: Movies! In the coming weeks, it's likely you'll catch a movie created by Avid customers-if you haven't already. As evidenced below, Avid solutions play a key role in a number of high-profile, potential Oscar contender films being released this season. Whether comedy, drama, or "based on a true story," editors across the board are using Avid systems long after the cameras stop rolling.

Andrew Wiseblum, ACE, was familiar with director Darren Aronofsky’s work when he took on Black Swan, a psychological thriller about a ballerina who unravels as she dances the challenging role of the Black Swan. Wiseblum was the visual effects editor on The Fountain and the editor on The Wrestler. I spoke with him yesterday about cutting Aronofsky’s latest film: Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman as Nina, a tortured ballerina; Mila Kunis ...
