It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The Documentary on How to Make a Documentary (or feature film or music video or epic home movie) I’ve known Guy Noffsinger for almost ten years now. We met after 9-11 at the Office of Naval Intelligence in DC and worked on a 60 minute "History Channel" type unclassified documentary on the History of Operational Intelligence. Not an easy subject to tackle! Guy took the reigns on this production working with the talent, narrator, and Executive Producer.

Whether it's a slasher film, a period romance or a documentary, the film editor is often the director's best friend. 'The only difference between a jigsaw puzzle and what a film editor does is that the jigsaw puzzle picture always ends up exactly the same,'' Nick Beauman says. ''But if you gave the same material to 10 different editors, you would get 10 different outcomes.''

Two weeks ago I wrote about how I emailed EditShare, the new owner of the Lightworks digital editing system and didn’t hear back. I wanted to know, and let you know, about how the opportunity to register for free Lightworks software as it appeared closed. I have now heard back from Managing Director James Richings.

Though it is the simplest way to transition from one shot to the next, making a natural-looking cut can be tricky. If you’re not careful, you could end up with a series of jump cuts which can be jarring to the viewer. The best way to make an otherwise obvious cut is to make a motivated edit.

It was a bit of a surprise back in April when NLE stalwart (at least for some) Lightworks announced that it would go open source. EditShare is the current owner of the Lightworks editing application, one of the original nonlinear editors that has cut a lot of feature films you may have seen. EditShare had a Lightworks demo set up in a back corner of their booth at NAB 2010.

Terence and Philip discuss the importance of designing workflow as opposed to simply jumping in and cutting. How have the roles of Assistant changed. The inevitable sidetrack covers the role of "independent film" when so many get made but never return their investment, and what’s the better alternative. We also discuss the workflow for reality TV.
