It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Showtime’s Nurse Jackie just had its second season finale, but with the cable network’s announcement that the popular show will return for a third season next year, fans of the dark, half-hour comedy series about a flawed emergency room nurse at All Saints' Hospital in New York City will have something to look forward to. In the meantime, Gary Levy and Anne McCabe, the two picture editors, and Steve Borne, the supervising sound editor, talk about their work on the just-concluded second seaso...

The more I thought about professional practices, the more I realized I had other questions to address first. Editmentor serves lots of different people with varying levels of experience, and we’ve had a number of questions from people asking "How can I become a professional editor?" And, in a world where literally anyone can assemble clips of video and audio on their own computer, what makes a professional editor professional?

Editor Bob Murawski was finishing Spiderman 3 when he got a call from friend, Paul Ottosson, who had been hired as sound designer on The Hurt Locker. Director Kathryn Bigelow was looking for an editor and wanted to meet him. Desperate to find an editor who would go to the Middle East, she was already location scouting in Jordan.

No, no, no. I don’t think that there’s one editing platform that rules over everything. And I never have felt that way. When I edited on film, there were debates as to whether a Moviola upright was superior to a flatbed (too noisy!! too assistant intensive!!) and I used both.

OK, I am NOT going to say that Avid Media Composer 5.0 is a "game changer." Mainly because I hate that term. And I don’t think that it is changing the editing game. But, what it is doing is adding more tools to make it a better application. Hmmm...well, I might actually have to change my thoughts on the term "game changer," because it is actually changing the game, just not the game you all are thinking about. The game Avid is changing is the one it has been playing with it’s user base.

I got your attention didn’t I? So what’s dirty editing? I don’t think there is an actual term coined for what I’m about to talk about. I’ve heard it referred to as checker-boarding but I’m still not quite sure that grasps the concept enough. So I’m going to call it dirty editing.
