It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Author’s Note: I originally wrote and published this article at my site Optimize Yourself (as part of my ongoing “Dear Hollywood” series). But despite the fact this article largely discusses the current ongoing battle between the “below-the-line” crew and “the producers” specific to the Hollywood craft unions (specifically IATSE), I don’t believe what’s at stake [...]Read More...

Replay: Feature films of days gone past were really quite grainy compared to the pictures produced by a modern digital camera. We didn't complain too much then and just accepted it as part of the look. Should we be placing less emphasis on noise if it means a more emotionally resonant picture is produced?

Building my own editing PC was always something I thought was just a little but outside of my abilities, but I was wrong. I’ve always admired those who built their own workstation. I’ve never been a gamer, at least not since the Atari and ZX Spectrum days of the 1980s, so I’d never watched any [...]Read More...

A new open-source metadata project has recently been launched. According to the press release, OpenMetadata aims to provide a “single place to discover, collaborate, and get your data right“. We’ve covered the crucial importance of metadata numerous times on DAM News, and we’re pleased to see that an initiative has taken the plunge and chosen to reimagine and consolidate metadata with a ground-up, schema-first approach. The article provides further details on joining the project, along w...

In a decidedly Los Angeles show of support for IATSE’s strike-authorization, hundreds of people queued up in Hollywood Sunday to have their car windows painted with the union’s logo, raised fists, and messages urging some 60,000 crafts workers to “vote yes” in elections that begin Friday.
