It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

I just returned from my trips to NY and SF. I’ll have a post up about the meetings but first I wanted to give a few thoughts of some recent trouble brewing in the VFX industry.

http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2014/01/crash-...
The new version of Adobe Illustrator (17.1) creates files (.ai, .eps, .pdf files) that contain XMP metadata in a format that causes After Effects to crash when reading that metadata. The crash occurs when you add a footage item from Illustrator to a composition. The crash affects all recent versions of After Effects, including After Effects CS6 (11.0) and After Effects CC (12.0, 12.1, 12.2). The workaround is rather simple: You can prevent After Effects from reading the XMP metadata from the...

A new python plugin from César Vonc will allow you to modify a vertex map based on the movement of that point. Used as a tag within Cinema 4D, Influence Point can provide some gray visual information on how an animated object is moving, being able to map speed, rotation, stretching, density and even acceleration.

Using Maya Nodes and a bit of maths, Armin Halac offers a look at creating a mirroring across a plane, such as mirroring and object and its behavior across the YZ planes. One of the great things about Autodesk Maya, is that you have the opportunity to build things simple by stringing nodes together – not as affluently as you could in Houdini or Softimage mind you, but still very practical.

Finding just the right typography for a project is a classic conundrum for a designer. Do you go all out for something unique to give the piece real character, or is it better to opt for something neutral and classic that doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the design?

The folks at Red Giant have recently been releasing updates that help with crashes and other problems. We strongly recommend that any users of Red Giant software go to this page and download and install the most recent versions of their software. While you’re at it, this would be a good time to check for and install the most recent updates for your Adobe software, too. If you continue to have problems, be sure to submit bug reports and crash reports so that we can isolate and fix these is...
