It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

A new product from HighlightCam aims to eliminate all the tedius work from video editing (for the typical consumer of course) through careful use of some smart algorithms. Built for iPhone and iPod Touch, their app allows you to load in your videos, answer a few short questions, and let their Amazon Cloud-driven service create the video you want.

Today’s Quicktip almost seems like a no-brainer but I’m surprised that I still see projects come in the door where items have been numbered in a bin 1, 2, 3—- 10, 11, 12 instead of 01, 02, 03—- 10, 11, 12. Why add the zero? So when you sort the items by name in the bin they are sorted properly.

There are several reasons that footage might need repair. Archival sources (especially those that are tape-based) can wear with time or equipment failure. Rushed crews or poor preproduction can also impact the quality of a shot through inadequate lighting.

As you are aware by now, we’re going through our book Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects 5th Edition ("CMG5" for short) and pulling out a few "hidden gems" from each chapter. These will include both essential tips for new users, as well as timesaving gems that experienced users may not be aware existed.

Today is my birthday but that hasn’t stopped me from exploring my imagination. Now while Rotoscoping is no secret nor is it new, it isn’t easy and graphic and video editors are always looking to learn advance editing techniques. Earlier I created an awesome picture of my University with a mountain view. I am sure you have seen people add these types of effects in movie, television shows and graphic designs but did you know it is really easy? Well of course it is...

With cutting rooms more and more portable, many of us like to take a portion of a project’s media home and work on it from there. In Media Composer this can be a real pain because it’s so hard to identify the media files that go with a large group of clips. There’s a way to do it that I described in a previous post, but it’s complicated, and Avid should have simplified it long ago.
