It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

If buzz equals sales, then Blackmagic Design has a hit on its hands with DaVinci Resolve for the Mac. They have successfully cashed in on DaVinci’s mystique with the desktop crowd. Blackmagic Design even seems to be getting the interest of Apple Color users, in spite of the fact that Resolve really doesn’t have anything significantly better to offer, aside from the brand name. Ironically, a number of...

We’re doing 28 Days of Quicktips again over at the Editblog on PVC. And we’re also looking for reader submitted Quicktips. The best one gets their choice of a book and some iOS software. There’s been some great ones submitted thus far.

I like to do these metaphors from time to time to help people understand what it’s like to be an editor from a job point of view. I also happen to like food so here's my next metaphor:

We originally talked about the concept of starting over in production with a Green field – no established starting points – in episode 11. In this episode we take it a little deeper as Terry and Philip revisit the subject. Another longish show, so put on a render, pull out the snow blower or take a long walk.

Dupe detection is one of those great little features that you don't have to have in your editing application but it certainly makes tracking used footage in an edit much easier. For those unfamiliar, dupe detection tracks footage used in an edit and identifies duplicate shots in the timeline with colored lines in the clip.

As you are aware by now, we’re going through our book Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects 5th Edition ("CMG5" for short) and pulling out a few "hidden gems" from each chapter. These will include both essential tips for new users, as well as timesaving gems that experienced users may not be aware existed.
