To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

Syncing Dailies

January 13, 2011, 10:41 AM

http://splicenow.com/2011/01/12/syncing-dailies/

In 2011, hand syncing of dailies seems downright anachronistic. Doesn’t timecode make all that trivial? Yes, with digital cameras, automatic syncing is standard practice. But this inevitably involves two clocks, and that means they are subject to drift. It doesn’t take much drift to put you out of sync a frame or two. Production is supposed to jam (synchronize) their clocks...

Why are we all worried Apple will abandon Pro Vid.

January 12, 2011, 09:37 PM

There seems to be a constant panic among Final Cut Studio users that Apple is "going to abandon professional video" because it isn’t the first thing that Apple talks about at every press conference or event. But it shouldn’t be. Pro Apps are a relatively small – but highly profitable – division within Apple. True the focus is on iOS devices, which turns out to be a great thing for...

Avid to Cut Jobs

In a recent 8K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Avid disclosed that it plans to restructure its operations during the first half of 2011 by eliminating positions "in lower growth geographies and markets," while reinvesting in "more strategic areas with greater opportunity for growth." Avid also said that it will be closing portions of certain office facilities as part of this process.

Favorite Scene: The Social Network

I thought it might be a good practice to start a discussion amonst the editing community about what scenes they admire most about current or past films. I had "The Social Network" deleivered to my door yesterday thanks to Amazon’s outstanding prices on Blu-Rays. Before I take another look at the film I wanted to know what was your favorite scene in terms of editing? The club? The dorms? Thoughts?

Useful Tools for Editors: BG Renderer

January 12, 2011, 10:51 AM

http://www.studiodaily.com/blog/?p=5290

I am not an After Effects whiz, more like an AE hack, but I dream of being one someday, so I excitedly look at all the cool After Effects goodies that come along. Twitter went wild today talking about a new version of BG Renderer. It’s a script that seems to do just what the name implies, render in the background. I quote: "BG Renderer is a script that allows you to render your Render Queue items in the background while you can continue working in After Effects...

Lloyd Alvarez is a top-notch After Effects user who has also developed a handful of very useful scripts for the program. One of his most popular is BG Renderer, which launches instances of After Effects in the background to render compositions while you continue to work in the foreground. Lloyd just announced BG Renderer 2.0 with After Effects CS5 compatibility, plus a whole host of new features.

Interplay Window Tips

The Interplay Window is a great tool to access content easily and efficiently in an Interplay environment. Many of you may use it in your daily edits to check-in and check-out items from your database, but do you actually personalize it like you do your keyboard or timeline? If not you should. As you will see below, the Interplay Window has many options you probably aren’t aware of.

DaVinci Resolve for Mac review online

It took awhile (and a couple of Resolve articles here on PVC) but I finally finished my full DaVinci Resolve for Mac article that went online today over at Studio Daily. It’s quite lengthy but as I was working out my ideas and thoughts on the application I began to realize just how deep an application Resolve for Mac really is.

VLC for iOS vanishes 2 months after eruption of GP

January 11, 2011, 05:00 PM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/01/vlc-for-...

It's official: the iOS version of VLC has been yanked from the App Store. Though Apple didn't offer any reasons for its removal, the media player is believed to have been pulled thanks to a licensing dispute that started more than two months ago. The iOS version of VLC was not developed by VideoLAN, the nonprofit association that manages the project. Instead, it was created by a company named Applidium, which was able to get VideoLAN's blessing to develop and distribute the app for free.
