To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

BitAnimate (Lake Oswego, OR) is a small start-up company developing 2D-to-3D conversion technology. They envision their technology being used in a variety of ways- from an on-line conversion service for users to upload their clips and watch them in 3D, to embedded application like 3DTVs. They also believe their technology is at such a level that they can approach Hollywood to dramatically reduce the time and cost of making theatrical-quality conversions.

This week and next, we’ll create a semi-transparent video progress bar as you know them from Youtube et. al. We’ll create the elements in Marquee, then (next week) animate in Media Composer. The cool thing about this approach is that you’ll be able to change the length of the animation to fit your piece of video just by trimming it!

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, version 5.0.3 is an update now available. This update to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 adds support for two new NVIDIA cards: the Quadro 4000 (Mac) and the Quadro 5000M (Windows). The addition of these new cards extends the power of the Mercury Playback Engine’s GPU acceleration to users working on laptops as well as workstations.

Low light = video noise, there is no doubt of that. Of course there are many other factors that contribute to video noise but the entire focus is where to go from here, when you have footage that simply can't be re-lit or shot. I have tested many 'denoiser' filters and have only found one or two that did a commendable job. However, as a result of their use there was definitely some softening of the image. There are times when the color of the footage you have to edit is less than ideal. There are other times when it’s downright bad. Fortunately, many editing applications have a color corrector tool that will turn discolored footage into well-matched, white balanced shots.

High-End Post-Production Applications Lightworks

It was announced in April that Lightworks, the high-end editing application favored by Oscar-winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker, was going open source. They’ve now delivered on their promise, with a free open source beta now available. At the same time, The Foundry, best known for their high-end compositing application Nuke, have released a free public beta of their forthcoming RED post-producting solution Storm.
