It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Whether it's a slasher film, a period romance or a documentary, the film editor is often the director's best friend. 'The only difference between a jigsaw puzzle and what a film editor does is that the jigsaw puzzle picture always ends up exactly the same,'' Nick Beauman says. ''But if you gave the same material to 10 different editors, you would get 10 different outcomes.''

This week, another viewer suggestion: We’ll create the high-contrast, saturated look that is common to many sports trailers. We’ll also play around with BCC’s Glow and add some flicker to the shots.

Two weeks ago I wrote about how I emailed EditShare, the new owner of the Lightworks digital editing system and didn’t hear back. I wanted to know, and let you know, about how the opportunity to register for free Lightworks software as it appeared closed. I have now heard back from Managing Director James Richings.

I normally carpool with my wife as she works only a couple blocks away from the ranch, and at about the same time. I can be flexible enough to sync my hours with hers. This basically just keeps me here an extra half hour, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as it's a little time window to tie up loose ends. This morning she asked me what was on my agenda for today, to which I replied lots of show editing.

Miracle-working automatic synchronization software Pluraleyes is the absolute best way to sync sound in any less-than-ideal situation (where you don’t have perfectly synched timecode — or any timecode at all, for that matter). If you’re shooting on an HDSLR and are recording audio to a separate device, this is a must-have. Now Pluraleyes has finally come to the Mac version of Premiere Pro, and Singular Software is offering this version at a 20% discount until December 11.

Embedding chapter markers into Quicktime movies with Final Cut Pro is both easy, & useful. I discovered a new use recently when preparing interview media for review. By embedding chapter markers at the beginning of each talking point, I made it easier for my producer to review the interview footage. I also added a Timecode Generator filter to make it easy to get specific timecode. In general it is nice to add chapter markers to Quicktime movies, so that they are more navigable.

This means that with ANY computer, you can capture to the formats that the three major NLEs like: ProRes, DnxHD, and MPEG-2I...with their separate VETURA software. This means that I can use my MXO2 to capture footage for AVID! Well, it is still QT, and yes, Avid MC5 will still require it to be "transcoded" to MXF in order to be fully functional in the Avid workflow (export of AAF and OMF for audio). Still...pretty big step here.
