To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

127 Hours: Digital Workflow in the Desert

With Danny Boyle at the helm, principal photography on the upcoming 127 Hours was anything but routine. The director wanted to shoot the harrowing true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston on location in Utah, using the tiny Silicon Imaging SI-2K cameras he employed on Slumdog Millionaire. That meant building a new digital workflow far from the comforts of Hollywood.

This week's gone pretty fast for me, which is good seeing it's an entire 5 days! (see my entry "Here's Johnny... where?"). The other day, a rep asked me if I could do this animation thingy for a potential client. Thanks to AE, on line tutorials, and yes, even some direction here on CC, I did! It was a good exercise in sharpening up my AE skills, something that always comes in handy. I'm going to tweak this little...

Useful Tools for Editors: Scopo Gigio

October 21, 2010, 11:10 AM

One thing that I’ve never quite understood about Adobe After Effects is why it doesn’t come straight from Adobe with a full mix of built-in video scopes. The application does so much and is sometimes used as a finishing tool, yet Adobe has never added scopes. Software scopes are a reality, included in everything from Final Cut Pro to Premiere Pro.

Progressive AVCHD

In looking at the AF100 recently I was asked by Yves Simard if it was actually recording a progressive signal, or whether it was progressive within an interlaced signal (essentially the same as a Progressvie Segmented Frame, or PsF). I hadn’t thought about it, but it seems a lot of people are quite convinced that AVCHD doesn’t support 1080p25 or 1080p30 (only 1080p24 has native progressive support).
