It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Today I have the great pleasure of posting Part I of a conversation I had with an amazing, not to mention amazingly accomplished person, Bill Warner. A graduate of MIT, Bill founded Avid Technology in 1987. With a small team of hardware and software engineers Mr. Warner created the tool that radically altered the way films, television and all dynamic media are created, the Avid Media Composer...

Anyone who has ever read the seven articles I’ve published so far about critical video evaluation —be it with the HP DreamColor monitor, or any other brand and model— knows why this process has traditionally required a professional interface to do this properly. Even Apple has warned about this, both verbally at NAB 2005 when announcing the Digital Cinema Desktop, as well as in writing, in Apple’s support article TA27705.

Avid is on a roll in 2010, highlighted by the purchase of Euphonix and the release of Media Composer version 5, its signature creative editing application. The company has been on an accelerated development pace for the Media Composer/NewsCutter/Symphony editing family, with recent releases adding such innovative features as AMA (Avid Media Access), Stereo 3D editing...

These days most everyone in post production knows about Automatic Duck. The Auto Duck tools have been translating editing timelines from application to application (among other things) for many years now. One of their most famous (and oldest) products is Pro Import AE. From the Automatic Duck website:

A buddy of mine, Bryce Randle of Post Fifth Pictures, popped in on iChat to ask me the question: "Do you remember how to change the size of frames in the bin?" Boy do I. That was one of the day to day tasks I did as an assistant editor on EVEN STEVENS. One editor liked to have all of the shots laid out by camera angle and take.

In the midst of my daily afternoon brain fart, I could not remember how to change the size of a frame in my bin. I shot a quick iChat IM over to Shane Ross at LFHD.net to get an answer. So he quickly through a small tip of a post together. Thanks Shane!

I run into a lot of situations where I put music under an edit and I have vo on top. This combination ends up failing on almost every piece of music that has vocals because it sounds like a trainwreck. Often I will have creatives ask me if I can "turn down the vocals" as if I somehow can pull the multitrack mix out of the low bitrate mp3 that they just emailed me.
