To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

Paper Cut Musings

I’ve always been amused by the double entendre of this phrase, appreciated only by those in our business. A paper cut is a linear ordering of topics, lines, shots, and sounds to include.

Although stalled for awhile prior to being acquired by the Boris / Artel Software organization, once the Boris folks took over in 2005 the rate of Media 100 development has, if anything, been advancing exponentially. So if you're still living in the past, here's the milestones in Media 100 development you've missed.

If you have a dslr and you are using the canon fcp ingest plug in you may have run into a situation where the plug in won’t recognize the memory card "dump" when you move footage over to a hard drive. This happens because the plug in looks for a specific folder structure.

Cue Sheets in the Cloud

My previous post described a cue sheet that adds itself up using custom functions in Open Office, a technique that would work equally well in Excel. I took this approach because I was unaware that Google Docs has a scripting function that lets me do the same thing.

As a wrap-up to NAB 2010 I’ve put together a little list of NAB 2010’s winners and losers; a bit from the perspective of the South Hall which is post production. Until next year...

When your canvas in Final Cut Pro is stuttering, in most cases right after you plug or unplug an additional monitor while FCP is open, try refreshing your AV devices. That should fix the problem.

Make Edit Change List in FCP

Making an EDL is simple in Final Cut Pro, but making an edit change list has been a bit of a mystery to me, until recently. First off, the only way it’s even mentioned in FCP is within Cinema Tools.
