It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The hardware liberation that started in Media Composer 6.0 is continued in the 6.5 update with a toggle for attached devices that releases them, so you can use software-only features without having to disconnect them. This is fine for Avid's own hardware, but third-party drivers need to be updated to make use of the feature or it gives an error message.

Chances are pretty good that you have numerous Flash memory cards floating around, but when was the last time you updated it? The Secure Digital (SD) memory card format is the most popular and while the physical size of the card has not changed, the standards most certainly have. You can get SDSC, SDHC, SDIO and SDXC versions of SD cards and then you have speed grades for each class.

Dale Grahn, who is what used to be called a Colour Timer in the days when there was no digital colour processing, has created the colour "look" of some seminal films of the last couple of decades: Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator and Munich. Having Stephen Spielberg on your resume is obviously a good thing.

Advanced Marquee Techniques Part FOUR: In this lesson, Kevin P McAuliffe expands on his Title Roll lesson (Advanced Marquee Technique #3), and shows how you would go about integrating client logos into your title rolls and crawls. Again, this is a technique that is normally done outside of Media Composer or Symphony, but as this lesson shows, we can do it right here from within the timeline.

Advanced Marquee Techniques Part FIVE: In this lesson, Kevin P McAuliffe talks about applying textures to your text, he shows you why seamlessly tileable elements are the way to go, and even how to manipulate your textures, once they have been applied. Finally, he wraps things up by showing you how easy it is to apply textures to any element you have created inside of Marquee. If you've started creating 3D text inside of Marquee, this...

You can use Apple's Windows ProRes codec to edit on Windows with Apple ProRes. You cannot export your Files to ProRes Windows. You can only read (edit) Prores on Windows. To get ProRes Codecs on Mac OS, for read (editing) and export of files, buy Motion from the Apple App Store. Avid's DNxHD codec is free for Windows and Mac OS and can read and write files on both.

There are a few ways of importing RED media into the Avid depending on your workflow and if the DIT is providing transcoded media. RED source files contain a lot of metadata which is useful during certain phases of post production. Because AAF and MXF media don’t retain this information once transcoded, an Avid Log...
