The title of this series, “The Video Essay As Art,” isn’t meant to be facetious. I think that there really is room for artistry in the field of video essays. In my last piece I outlined a wide range of video essay categories, and the disparities between these videos suggests that the term “video essay” lacks a sense of cohesion. This is similar to a problem facing the video essay’s spiritual forebear, the essay film.
